Life Changing Messages by Chaplain Chris Athey

A Life of Service and Commitment

Chris Athey is a highly accomplished minister and educator based in Weatherford, Texas, with a profound commitment to serving both the church community and individuals in rehabilitation. Together with his wife, Janet, a pianist and vocalist, who complements his ministry. Chris actively engages in ministry, utilizing their talents to uplift and support local congregations.

Armed with a robust educational background, Chris proudly holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Arlington Baptist University. He has further honed his skills through numerous leadership studies and other training, which have enhanced his counseling abilities. He has completed three units of Clinical Pastoral Education at Bryan College Station and is currently pursuing his Master of Divinity at Louisiana Baptist University.

Throughout his distinguished career, Chris has held pivotal roles, including serving as the Director of Freedom Academy Seminary Extension since 2020 and as Supervisory Chaplain for various units within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice from 1993 to 2020. His extensive experience as a chaplain includes service at the Hughes, Estes, Ellis, and Holliday Prison Units, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the rehabilitation and support of offenders. Earlier in his career, Chris made significant contributions as a pastor and associate pastor at several churches, including Grace Baptist Church and Timberline Baptist Church, where he provided essential guidance and spiritual support to congregations in need. During his time as a chaplain, he witnessed an average of 200 baptisms each year, along with many professions of faith through Freedom Academy.

In addition to his impactful ministry work, Chris is a published author of several influential books on doctrine, discipleship, and Biblical studies. His notable works include "The Ultimate Gift of God," "Learning to Walk with God," "Living the Victorious Christian Life," and "The Life of Abraham and Joseph," as well as various discipleship materials and workbooks. These writings have strengthened the faith of hundreds, guiding new believers and enhancing the theological understanding of countless individuals.

Chris has led faith-based programs in Texas prisons, creating initiatives such as the first "faith-based dorm" and an academy for offenders. He launched projects such as The Road to Success, The Onesimus Project, Lighthouse Bible Academy, and Freedom Academy, which have positively impacted the lives of many. His efforts have earned him recognition, including the Governor’s Award for developing the most innovative program for incarcerated veterans. 

As a seasoned conference speaker, Chris continues to inspire and educate others on their spiritual journeys. His unwavering passion for his Saviour, ministry, education, and support for marginalized communities is evident in his ongoing commitment to serving the Weatherford area and beyond.

On June 30, 2023, Chris married Janet Duvall after the passing of his wife of forty-three years. Janet, as the Foundation and Chairperson of the Board of Sanctified Hope Transitional Home for Women in Weatherford, Texas, brings her talents as a pianist, often sharing her gifts with local congregations. Together, Chris and Janet have been dubbed a marriage made in Heaven, combining their extensive experience in service to the community. They enjoy traveling, hiking, and serving the Lord together, reflecting their shared mission to make a positive impact on women being released from prison.
